January, 2021: Covid Update and Local Events

Following up on the blog post from November (where you can find the main details on Covid practices), we have bounced from orange to yellow back to orange.  Under the Orange Stoplight, all beaches are closed from 6:00am to 7:00pm, stores close at 8pm, bars and restaurants must be closed by 11:00pm. All non-open air bars and gyms must close.

Bottom line: for tourists: You can still go out and enjoy the beach, watch the sun set, and head back to your condo/house/hotel, freshen up and go for dinner (or order in).  No dancing ’til dawn (which frankly is not a big deal as we are family-friendly Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, not the party capital Cancun!). No all-nighter-fiestas/ weddings, etc.. Basically it feels like the charm of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo has returned.  Back when everything closed by midnight, or you turned into a pumpkin! Ah, the good old days…

If you happen to see a female superhero about, that is Susana Distancia Susana is often seen in circles on floors a meter apart (such as in a bank or airport), or in posters with arms stretched out. reminding people to stay at a healthy distance! Her name is a play on words: Su Sana Distancia “Your Healthy Distance”.

The local government has taken this Time of Covid to give Zihuatanejo a facelift… from December through March. Under construction are portions of the Paseo del Pescador (Fisherman’s Walk) and the zócalo of Zihuatanejo (AKA the main basketball court!). One would think this was to discourage tourism (no crowding in the zócalo, etc…), but sadly it has caused the main street sidewalks to be overcrowded.

But fear not!  There is still live music to be heard during Orange Light at reasonable hours for the average tourist!  Masks and safe distance seating are still mandatory, of course. Below are a few places to enjoy local talent:

  • 6-10pm Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays at El Canto de la Sirena
  • 9:30-11pm  Fridays & Saturdays at Bandido’s
  • May we also suggest… Strolling duos in Zihuatanejo! You will find Dueto Morales nightly offering their services at restaurants such as Garrobo’s, Mediterraneo, El Chuleto and Angustina.

The yearly January event Tequila Rock ‘n Blues Explosion has been postponed to (hopefully) March 2021.  Whether that will happen in person or online is unclear.

Speaking of online events- if you are wishing to hear wonderful music for a cause right now, this video of the event for Bet Shalom from September is just what you need!
